What does IRCC charge?

Nothing, if you ask for your own records under the Privacy Act.

Canada's Privacy Act gives you the right to see your own records. The Act names Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Since 13 July 2022, the right also covers everyone outside Canada.

The rules made under the Privacy Act set no fee. IRCC's own page says:

“There are no fees involved with the processing of a request under this Act.”

You can send this request yourself, in your own name. You do not need an agent. What a request involves: free, or we do it for you

What is the $5 fee, then?

The $5 fee belongs to a different law, the Access to Information Act. IRCC's page for that Act says:

“The fee for requests under the Access to information Act is $5.00.”

“To send a request you must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or an individual or corporation currently in Canada.”

That law is for government records in general. For your own records, the free Privacy Act route is open to you wherever you live.

For every records request: IRCC may withhold some lines, and the release shows which section of the law it relied on. If you think something was withheld wrongly, you can complain to the commissioner named in IRCC's reply.

Nobody can make IRCC reply faster, including us. Paying us does not change IRCC's decision on your visa.
