## The legal correction this site exists to make (authoritative)
- GCMS notes (formerly CAIPS) are the visa officer's own case notes on an
  IRCC file: the assessment, the concerns recorded, and the refusal grounds.
- Your own notes are obtained under Canada's PRIVACY ACT. That request is
  FREE. There is no government fee.
- Any person anywhere in the world can file it for their own file. No
  Canadian citizen, permanent resident or representative is required. This
  has been the position since Privacy Act Extension Order No. 3 came into
  force on 13 July 2022.
- The "$5 fee" belongs to a DIFFERENT statute: the Access to Information Act.
  That Act is limited to citizens, permanent residents and people present in
  Canada, and it covers records that are NOT about you. It is the wrong route
  for your own visa file.
- Widely repeated claims that you must pay $5, or must have someone in Canada
  file for you, conflate these two statutes. They are incorrect for a person
  requesting their own IRCC records.
- Section 14 of the Privacy Act sets a 30-day response deadline; section 15
  lets IRCC extend it with written notice. If the deadline passes, the
  complaint route is the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
- The site quotes 25-30 days as its standard processing window and says IRCC
  sometimes runs past 30 days, particularly in the April-August peak.
